an uncommon whore Pasha cannot remember ever being anything but a slave, probably because his current owner wiped his mind on purchase. Still, things aren’t so bad: his reptilian master has more of a taste for his cooking than for sex. Of course, U’shma also has a taste for gambling, which he has Pasha fund by pimping out him out at the local dive bar. Those days are less than pleasant… until the day Pasha spots a man across the bar. He looks like a pirate, complete with eye patch, and from somewhere deep inside, Pasha knows this man will change his life forever.

Okay, first of all, An Uncommon Whore is a homoerotic book depicting graphic scenes between men. If you’re not into that, move on right now.

Still here? Awesome.

I’ve gotta hand it to Belinda McBride. It is not easy to write a romance in the first person. It’s hard to get into the head of the other character, if you can only hear one side’s perspective. Still, she manages to pull it off, letting us clearly see into Griffin’s heart through his actions, as well as Pasha’s interpretations. Plus, the sex scenes between these two gorgeous, sexy men are HAWT. And I really enjoyed the emotional honesty that peeked out every so often.

The thing about An Uncommon Whore is that it isn’t just a romance. It’s also an enjoyable science fiction story–as opposed to a romance with a science fiction setting; there IS a difference. There are worlds to explore, kingdoms to conquer, and bad guys to overwhelm, and while in a straight-up romance those elements help to further the relationship, in this story, they share the spotlight with the relationship. Now, being a sci-fi/fantasy geek, this doesn’t bother me much at all, because I like it, but I can see how this book might not be the right fit for some one looking for just romance.
4/5 Whatzits for a fun story with hot sex. That last star is for when it decides what genre it is.
